Viral 19-year-old waste seller bags ₦1m Cash, ₦7.05m in donations, food items, and scholarship
A video of a 19-year-old Nigerian boy selling plastic waste and cartons to raise money for his work tools has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread emotional reactions from Nigerians.
The teenager, identified as Samuel, was spotted at a collection point lifting and dropping heavy bags of plastic waste and cartons. In the video, he explained that each bag earned him between ₦1,000 and ₦2,000, money he was saving to purchase tools needed for his tiling work.
Samuel was later approached by TikTok content creator @bayuztvs, who asked why he was involved in the waste business and how he got into it. The young boy revealed that he needed funds to buy his work tools and that his parents were unaware of his activities. He explained that although he learned tiling several years ago, he was unable to start working professionally due to a lack of equipment.
While listing the tools he needed — including a cutting machine, mallet, pitches, and a knife — the content creator was visibly moved by his story. Samuel was taken for a haircut, given new clothes, and treated to a meal at a restaurant. He was also surprised with one of the tiling tools he required, a new phone, and ₦50,000 in cash.
Overcome with emotion, Samuel broke down in tears, rolled on the floor, and repeatedly expressed gratitude. In the video, he also requested to see his mother, a moment that further touched social media users.
In a follow-up video, the content creator visited Samuel’s home and met his mother. During the visit, she was surprised with ₦1 million in cash. Samuel and his mother were also taken grocery shopping, where food items worth over ₦650,000 were purchased for the family.
Following the viral videos, supporters of the content creator reportedly donated a total of ₦7.05 million to assist Samuel and his family. The funds were aimed at helping the teenager fully establish himself in his trade and improve their living conditions.
In a major development, Samuel was also awarded a scholarship that will support his education up to the university level, securing his academic future alongside his vocational career.
