First african underground tunnel underway SGOF
The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGOF), Surv. Abuduganiyu Adeyemi Adebomehin, has affirmed that the Federal Government’s initiative to fully map Nigeria remains on track, dismissing any legal threats as inconsequential.
Speaking during a visit from the Abuja branch of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Adebomehin noted that the last nationwide mapping was conducted in the 1970s. He emphasised that the current initiative, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” represents the first modern surveying effort in the country. “The President is deeply invested in this project, and no one can challenge a presidential order,” he said.
Adebomehin also revealed plans for Africa’s first underground tunnel, linking Victoria Island to Badagry in Lagos state, in collaboration with the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi. He highlighted that relocating the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGOF) to the Presidency will strengthen the profession, reduce bureaucracy, and enhance operational efficiency. Surv. Robert Coker, Head of Hydrography at OSGOF, warned that opposing the move equates to challenging presidential authority. Surv. Alfred Adeojo, Secretary of NIS FCT, praised the SGOF for his leadership, noting that the move signals bright prospects for young surveyors.
