Police Arrest Actress Angela Okorie Over Cybercrime Case Involving Mercy Johnson

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State following her arraignment over alleged cyber-related offences. Okorie was arrested in Lagos State on Tuesday by operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) before being transferred to Abuja for prosecution.

Confirming the development on Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Adebisi, told TheCable Lifestyle that the actress was taken into custody by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja.

Filmmaker Ajemba Stanley, who is also a close associate of the actress, confirmed that Okorie was charged to court and subsequently remanded. In a series of cryptic social media posts, Stanley condemned the handling of the case, describing it as “an abuse of power.” “You arrested Angela Okorie at midnight yesterday, flew her to Abuja as early as 6am, and this morning took her to court, where she was remanded in Suleja prison,” Stanley wrote. “So the judiciary can work this fast? Tell me how you will sleep tonight knowing fully well that your colleague is in prison,” he added.

Stanley vowed to travel to Abuja to seek her release, urging the authorities to allow due legal process to take its course. “Whoever is in charge of Angela Okorie’s arrest should let her go and approach a competent court. If you feel Angela has defamed you, the right thing is to sue her, not use the police to oppress Nigerians,” he said. He also hinted that human rights organisations were following the case closely.

While the police have yet to release an official statement specifying the charges, industry sources suggested that the case might be connected to Okorie’s ongoing feud with fellow actress Mercy Johnson. The rivalry between both actresses escalated last year after Okorie made controversial allegations about Johnson’s health and accused her of hypocrisy, comments that drew widespread criticism online.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor Okorie’s representatives had provided further details regarding the allegations.
