White House defends accepting Qatar's jet as temporary Air Force One

The White House on Monday defended its acceptance of a Boeing 747-8 aircraft offered by Qatar for use as a temporary replacement for Air Force One, asserting that the move would comply fully with United States laws and transparency standards, AFP reported. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the aircraft, described as a “flying palace,” was being donated by the Qatari royal family to the US Department of Defence.

The jet is intended for use by President Donald Trump during an upcoming Middle East tour, which includes a stop in Qatar. “The Qatari government has graciously offered to donate a plane to the Department of Defence. The legal details are still being worked out. “Any donation to this government is always done in full compliance with the law, and we commit ourselves to the utmost transparency,” Leavitt told Fox News.

The offer has raised questions regarding potential ethical and national security implications, particularly as it involves a high-value gift from a foreign government. Critics have pointed to the US Constitution’s emoluments clause, which prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign states without congressional approval.
