75 women set to tee off at inaugural Oluremi Tinubu golf classic - Daily Trust
No fewer than 75 women golfers from across Nigeria are expected to compete in the inaugural Oluremi Tinubu golf classic, scheduled to hold on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the Canaanland Golf and Country Club in Koko, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The one-day tournament, named in honour of Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was announced by Felix Aganbi, Chief Executive Officer of Akogate Group. He said the classic is designed to strengthen women’s golf in Nigeria while creating pathways for emerging players and promoting sports development in the Niger Delta. In a statement, Aganbi said, “The Oluremi Tinubu Golf Classic will attract international talent, create opportunities for emerging players and motivate the next generation to see what is possible in the women’s game.”
The event is being driven by Sir Alfred and Mrs. Warami Temile, with organisers describing it as a strategic effort to grow women’s participation in golf and attract players, officials and spectators to Warri North. They noted that the tournament is also expected to boost tourism and hospitality activities in Delta State. “Beyond the one-day event, it offers women the chance to earn prize money,” Aganbi said, adding that the initiative is about empowerment and long-term development.
He called on men across the country to actively support female participation in sports, urging husbands, fathers and brothers to encourage their wives, daughters and sisters. “Men must recognize that an uneducated, uninformed woman is a liability not only to the family but to the nation,” he stated. In a related initiative aimed at grassroots development, organisers have also announced the Canaanland Golf Training and Tournament for young girls. The programme is scheduled for Sunday, March 8, 2026, at the same venue and will coincide with activities marking International Women’s Day.
According to Aganbi, the training is open to girls aged 8 to 16 and is designed to introduce them to golf in a supportive environment. “The golf training and tournament will introduce girls to golf in a social and engaging environment. It will also help them build confidence, learn vital skills, and connect with others in a friendly community,” he said. He explained that participants will receive coaching in golf fundamentals, including grip, stance, posture, alignment, rules and etiquette, as well as practical lessons covering chipping, putting, driving and an 18-hole playing experience.
“The training and tournament will broaden opportunities for girls in Nigeria to realize their potential through education,” Aganbi added, noting that the initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote female participation in sports, leadership and community development.
