Overview
If you ask anyone, be it a business owner, a 9–5 worker, or even a remote worker “When was the last time you had a full 8 hours of sleep?”
The answers will shock you.
Out of 100 people, maybe only 20% can boldly say, “Yes, I sleep well.”
But for the remaining 60%, the response is usually something like:
“Sleep 8 hours keh? There’s no time.”
“Person must hustle.”
“Money no dey sleep.”
And honestly, I get it.
This generation is built on pressure. Pressure to succeed, pressure to provide, pressure to not look lazy, pressure to “make it” before time runs out. So sleep becomes the first sacrifice. We wear sleep deprivation like a badge of honor, as if being tired means you’re serious about life.
Some people will even go further to explain why they don’t see any reason to sleep long hours:
“I function better with 4 hours.”
“Sleep is for the weak.”
“I’ll sleep when I’m rich.”
But here’s the uncomfortable truth no one likes to talk about: lack of quality sleep is quietly stealing from you: your productivity, your health, your focus, even your money.
You see, sleep is not just about closing your eyes. Quality sleep is when your body and brain actually reset. That’s when your brain processes information, your body repairs itself, and your energy is restored. Without it, you may be awake, but you’re not functioning at your best.
Think about it:
How many mistakes have you made because you were tired?
How many business decisions were rushed or poorly thought out?
How often do you feel irritated, unmotivated, or mentally foggy?
For workers, poor sleep shows up as low energy at work, slow thinking, and burnout.
For business owners, it shows up as bad decisions, short temper, lack of creativity, and eventually health problems that force you to stop completely.
Ironically, the same sleep we avoid in the name of hustling is the same thing that would actually help us make better money.
Because a well-rested mind:
Thinks faster
Makes smarter decisions
Handles stress better
Stays consistent for the long run
Hustle culture teaches us to run nonstop, but real success is about sustainability. You don’t win by burning out early; you win by lasting long enough to enjoy what you’re building.
This doesn’t mean you suddenly start sleeping carelessly or ignoring responsibilities. It simply means you start respecting your body as a partner, not an enemy. Even improving your sleep little by little, better bedtime habits, fewer late-night screens, intentional rest can make a massive difference.
So next time you say, “There’s no time to sleep,” ask yourself:
What am I really losing by not resting?
And is this hustle still worth it if my health collapses?
Trust me money is important, yes.
But without good sleep, even the money won’t be enjoyable.
