Alex Iwobi becomes first Nigerian to hit 30 goals, assists in EPL.
Super Eagles Midfielder, Alex Iwobi made history, becoming the first Nigerian player to register at least 30 goals and 30 assists in the Premier League.
The 28-year-old achieved the milestone in Fulham’s 3-2 win over Liverpool at Craven Cottage. Iwobi delivered a standout performance, scoring Fulham’s second goal in the 32nd minute, his eighth of the season—before turning provider just five minutes later. He teed up Rodrigo Muniz to make it 3-1, capping off a dominant first-half display. The former Arsenal and Everton midfielder was later substituted in the 82nd minute after playing a crucial role in Marco Silva’s side securing all three points.
Beyond the personal milestone, Iwobi’s brilliance helped Fulham climb to eighth in the Premier League standings, keeping their slim hopes of European qualification alive. The Nigerian’s growing influence at Fulham this season has seen him evolve from a dependable squad player into a genuine match-winner. His creativity, work rate, and composure in key moments have made him a central figure in Silva’s plans.
Iwobi wasn’t the only Nigerian to shine on the day. His compatriot, Calvin Bassey, also delivered a commanding performance in defence. Bassey played a key role in limiting the impact of Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack, showcasing his physical presence and improved ball-playing ability. Former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given was full of praise for Bassey, tipping him to become one of the best defenders in the world.
“He was turning into Johan Cruyff,” Given said on BBC. “I don’t know where he gets the energy from, he is strong and enjoying his football. Marco Silva knows he’s got a top player.” With Iwobi hitting new heights and Bassey drawing plaudits, it was a day to remember for Nigerian football fans.
