NUC accredits fresh courses for Unilorin, LASUSTECH

The National Universities Commission has approved fresh courses for the University of Ilorin and the Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu.

While UNILORIN secured approval for the teaching of 37 programmes, including Igbo and Hausa, which were presented during the October/November 2024 accreditation exercise, LASUSTECH obtained accreditation for 22 courses.

A press statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, UNILORIN, Mr Kunle Akogun, said “UNILORIN secures 100 per cent NUC accreditation With 36 of the 37 courses it presented for the National Universities Commission accreditation exercise, securing full accreditation and the remaining one getting interim accreditation.

“The result of the accreditation exercise carried out in October/November 2024, which has just been released, was contained in a letter dated April 30, 2025, and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Wahab Egbewole (SAN), by the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof Abdullahi Ribadu.

“In the letter, signed on behalf of Prof Ribadu by the NUC Acting Director of Accreditation, Engr. Abraham Chundusu, the commission said while 36 courses were granted full accreditation status, only one, Hausa, was granted interim accreditation.”

The statement stated that no course was denied accreditation, adding that the NUC also granted full accreditation to the Faculty of Management Sciences and Finance.

“From the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, Anatomy, which was the only programme presented, attracted full accreditation, just as Computer Science at the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences was also granted full accreditation.

“From the Faculty of Education, all 17 academic programmes presented were granted full accreditation, while from the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering were fully accredited.

“From the Faculties of Environmental Sciences, Clinical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences, each of the programmes presented was given full accreditation.

“From the Faculty of Physical Sciences and Social Sciences, three academic programmes were accredited, while four were granted full accreditation from the Faculty of Social Sciences.

“Of the two courses, Igbo and Hausa, that were presented for accreditation from the Faculty of Arts, the former was granted full accreditation while the latter was granted interim accreditation,” the statement added.

Reacting, Prof Egbewole (SAN) said the achievement was a confirmation of the consistent investment of the university administration on human and material resources.

A statement signed by the spokesperson of LASUSTECH, Mr Lanre Kuye, obtained by The PUNCH on Tuesday, said the full accreditation status for 22 out of 25 academic programmes reflected an outstanding performance for the new university.

LASUSTECH transitioned from Lagos State Polytechnic to a university on February 2, 2022.

The official summary released by the NUC, which was seen by The PUNCH, revealed that 88 per cent of the programmes assessed attained full accreditation, while the remaining 12 per cent received interim accreditation, due to staffing gaps.

The statement stated that no programme was denied accreditation.

“Highlights across faculties show that for the Faculty of Administration, six programmes: Accounting, Business Administration, Marketing, Actuarial Science, Banking and Finance, and Office and Information Management, secure full accreditation with scores ranging from 86.9 percent to 95.6 percent.

“In Agriculture, while most programmes, such as Animal Science, Crop Science, and Agricultural Extension, scored above 80 per cent, Agricultural Economics and Farm Management narrowly missed full marks due to staffing issues, recording an 80.9 percent total score but only 68.6 per cent in staffing, resulting in an interim accreditation.

“The Science Faculty had a similar situation, where Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry received interim status despite overall scores above 80 per cent, again due to subpar staffing scores.

“However, programmes like Physics with Electronics, Mathematics, Microbiology, and Statistics scored above 90 per cent, with Physics and Mathematics each earning an impressive 96.6 per cent,” Kuye stated.

He added that computing, environmental sciences, social sciences, and communication and media studies faculties also performed strongly, with all their programmes receiving full accreditation.

He said Mass Communication and Industrial Design courses scored 92.7 per cent and 95.6 per cent, respectively, while Economics led overall with 97.4 per cent.

“All programmes accredited were reported as ‘newly matured’, emphasising the university’s recent transition to full degree-awarding status under the NUC framework.

“The present accreditation is valid until 2029, marking a solid five-year cycle of academic assurance,” he stated.
