Overview

One Of The Major Problems In Watermelon Farming!

One of my biggest problems in watermelon farming was rodents. Once the fruits start forming, they pierce, eat, and damage the young fruits. Even fruit flies were easier to control than these rodents, especially squirrels. You will see big heads of Watermelon coming to farm the next day to see they have been damaged by rodents.

Tried scarecrows worked at first, but they do return after a few days. Fenced the whole farm with palm fronds and traps, even used black nylon to fence it at some point, but how they still enter the farm was a mystery. Now used dry grasses to cover the fruits was more effective.

To prevent this:

- Make sure the area where you are setting up the farm is not rodent infested.

- Fence the farm well with local palm fronds and traps.

- Use scarecrows and change their location after few days.

One of the major challenges in watermelon farming is rodents. Treat your soil well with nematicides any other issues can be easily controlled.
